Football in Ghana
Black stars
The popular nickname Black Stars was given to the team by Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah. The black star refers to the shipping company of Marcus Garvey – the pan-Africanist born in Jamaica – and became a symbol of “black pride.”
Ghana is sometimes referred to as the Brazil of Africa. And Ghana is doing well. The Black Stars surprised everyone at the World Championships in South Africa, being the only African team to get to the quarter-finals. The Black Satellites took home the trophy at the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt. And Ghana is doing well within Africa as well. The Black Stars have won the Africa Cup of Nations no less than four times and are thus the most successful team in the history of the Cup after Egypt.
